7/13/07 - River boat up the Thames and a visit to Greenwich

My first Friday in London and finally the weekend begins... why? Because there are no classes today!!! Woohoo! Finally my feet can kind of have a break! But not for long, my flatmate Megan and I are going on a school sponsered day trip to Greenwich via a boat ride up the Thames! yeah!

We are all to meet at Westminster pier at 10 am.. and of course we are running late but we make it on time and soon discover it’s only 6 of us on the trip. We by our tickets and board the barge and make our way to the top deck with it’s wet seats. No matter, a little water isn’t going to kill us (as a teacher explained to the 30 10 year olds she was escorting that morning). Oh yeah, lots of kids on this trip. Noise and very excitable because the seat of thier pants where getting wet, and then it’s starts to sprinkle and then rain.. off and on during the trip (complain, complain, complain they go lol).

Anyway, up the River Thames we go.. and inspite of the gloomy skys and rain off and on it is a beautiful sight (the trip would take us 30 minutes to reach Greenwich). And since I’ve remembered my camera I’ve taken beyond loads of pictures, so enjoy below.

From the dock across the river you can see the London Eye (pic 1 and 2), another item to add to the things I must do while in London, of course I’m terrified of hights but image the pictures I’ll be able to take.

Next to the Eye is the Dali Museum and the Aquarium (picture 3), I’m definitly heading to the Dali Museum since he’s one of my favorite surreal artist.

As the boat heads up river we turn back around and see the impressive sight of Big Ben and Parliment. Even in this gloomy weather the edifice manages to look bright and golden. (pictures 4-6) Further down we get closer to the London Eye (picture 7) to let more people on and off.

We pass Cleopatras Needle (picture 8), the tour guide gave us more info on this but I can’t remember... all I do remember it’s been here for a long time... lol. And there is a twin somewhere else in the world.

Down we go... and you can see the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral (picture 9-11) and as we pass St. Paul’s here are a couple with the Millennium Foot Bridge (pictures 12-13) in the foreground.

Next we pass the Tate Modern Museum on the right (picture 14) and right next to it in the round white building is the Shakespear Globe Theater (picture 15), where I will be attending next Tuesday to watch “Love’s Labour Lost”.

We pass a pirate ship (picture 16), again historical significant but I was too excited to see it that I didn’t pay attention. lol

Back to the left side of the bank, we pass the Tower of London (picture 17) much nicer view from the river. And then we approach a most impressive sight- the LONDON BRIDGE! (picture 18-19) Isn’t it amazing? Smaller than I thought but still very cool. I remember seeing it in “The Mummy Returns” lol and I believe it’s in the new Harry Potter movie. And then we have a picture of the London Bridge as we leave it behind (picture 20).

As we get closer to Greenwhich (about 15 minutes away) we see the financial district coming over the horizon. Just a bit of Modern London on the way to very historical London.
