7/19/07 - Covent Gardens to Bankside - bump foot

History class started at the Leicester Sq station for our walk/lecture of Covent Gardens, Leicester Square and then on to Bankside, where ever that was.

It started out simple and easy enough, he took us to Leicester Sq, which is smaller than what you expect, well I did. Lots of cinemas here. Chinatown is just above us, and the huge Swiss clock is here to. Basically this area use to be occupied by I think Charles the II? He had his residence here, which has now been converted into a movie theater/casino. Other of the upper class lived in this area too but I couldn’t here the teacher. But I took some pictures!

See below:

1. statue of some historical person (sorry can’t remember)

2. Statue of Charlie Chaplin, which is inaccurate per my teacher. He was left handed and his can is on his right.

3. Swiss clock, performance start at noon daily.

4. One of the little side streets (London is famous for) a Dutch Renaissance style building.

From there we he took us to my favorite place so far, Stanford's. It’s a book/map shop. They have tons of travel books and maps but even better they have historically accurate maps of London and the UK from different time periods... dating back to the late 1700’s! And this brought us to our final in class. We can either choose to take the multiple choice test or do a project in which we choose a part of London and take 3 makes (from the late 1700’s, early 1800’s and late 1800’s) and compare how the area’s have changed. Depending on how the midterm goes, once I see how he does the test I might just do the project. Plus I want to go back and get a map of Derbyshire from the 1700’s, it was on yellow/brown paper and looked just as old. Love this store!
